General Product Information

1. What is Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills is an online point of care reference and training product from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. It is the next generation of the classic product, Procedures, from LWW.

2. What are the benefits of Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills provides nurses with accurate, up-to-date information at the point of care, delivers solutions that work for users with varying computer experience, ensures that hospital’s procedures are documented and available to all nurses at all times, and enables efficient tracking of orientation and training.

3. What is the source for Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills were created by nurses for nurses. Every procedure in Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills was written and validated by a practicing nurse expert in the field and is formulated on the most recent, evidence based standards of patient care.

4. How often is the content updated in Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
We’re always abreast of current clinical guidelines and standards for nursing; therefore, we will update the product as dictated by changes to clinical guidelines. We review all procedures at least annually for updates on a rolling basis.

5.  What are the procedures reviewed for?
Each procedure is reviewed for:

  • Content currency including adherence to the most current standards and guidelines such as those required by the Joint Commission, the Intravenous Nursing  Society, American Heart Association, American Blood Bank, AACN guidelines, and so forth.
  • Reference currency within 3 to 5 years except for legacy references. Reference review also includes appropriateness of the references to the content.
  • Image and photo currency. We change these as necessary to keep them current.
  • Relevancy and timeliness of the procedures
  • Completeness of the procedure within the product guidelines.

6. Do you rank the references?
Yes, all evidence-based references, starting in March 2010, will be rated according to Melnyk’s Rating System for the Hierarchy of Evidence.

Accessing and Using Lippincott’s Nursing Skills and Procedures

1. How is Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills Accessed?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills is a web-based tool and can be accessed via the internet from within your hospital via IP authentication. There is no log-on required to view procedures so nurses get right to the information they need quickly.

2. Do you offer training on Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Yes. Training is offered via the web for customers. Visit the Training Page to learn more.

3. Is Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills Customizable?
Yes. Procedures, checklists, quicklists, and competency tests can be edited and customized in Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills. In fact, there is no limit to the number of customized procedures you can add to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills. There’s even an audit trail so you can track the author and date of all changes made to a procedure.

4. Can I add my institution’s name and logo to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Yes. In the Administration Tools there is an option to add your institution’s name and upload a logo. The name of your institution will appear on the upper left hand corner of the screen. The logo will appear on custom procedures when you print them out.

5. Can I upload images and videos to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Both .jpg and .gif files no larger than 500k can be uploaded to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills. At this time it is not possible to upload videos.

6. How do I retrieve a procedure that has been deleted?
Administrators can use the “Reinstate Procedure” button to retrieve any standard procedure that has been deleted. However, custom procedures--once deleted--cannot be reinstated.

7. Can I embed hyperlinks in custom procedures?
Yes, by simply using the chain-link icon within the administration tools.

8. Can I import charts and graphs to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Yes. It is possible to cut and paste charts and graphs from Microsoft Office software into Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills.

9. Is there any way to distinguish which procedures have notes once they have been made?
Yes. From within the Procedures tab in the Administration Tools, users have the option to view a list of all procedures with notes, all standard procedures, all draft procedures and all custom procedures. Additionally, every procedure that has a note will have a blue or red “N” icon behind it. A blue “N” icon indicates a note and a red “N” icon indicates a critical note.

10. How do the skills checklists work? Is there any notification sent to users when they are assigned a checklist?
Managers can email skills checklists associated with a procedure to a specific staff nurse who is being asked to demonstrate competency of that skill. They simply use the email icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen from within the specific checklist. Upon demonstrated competency of the skill in front of their manager, administrators can assign that checklist to a user and record the outcome. However, there is no automated way for Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills to notify users when they have been assigned a skill.

11. Can I import the names of users from an excel file?
Yes, you can convert your excel file to a comma separated value file (CSV) and import it.

12. Is Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills compatible with PeopleSoft?
In order to import names from PeopleSoft, Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills will need a CSV file or an XML file. Contact the technical help desk for the detailed specs at wkhealth-support@wolterskluwer.com or Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 8:00 pm EST Phone: 1-800-343-0064.

13. Do the procedures have audio?
Yes, those procedures with video clips have audio.

14. Can I add customized clinical categories to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Yes. You have the ability to customize Nursing and Clinical categories. This feature is accessed in the "Administrative Tools" section by selecting the "Categories" tab. This option is accessible to Admin and Level 2 users. Note that categories are classified as “Standard” or “Custom.”

15. Is it possible to print an Audit Trail?
Yes, the Audit Trail can be printed on the edit screens for Procedures, Checklists, and Quick Lists.

16. Can I migrate custom procedures from Procedures 3.0 to Lippincott's Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Yes. After you have purchased Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills and have filled out the IT information form you will receive a welcome email from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. At this point, a representative from LWW will contact you to assist you with the migration of any custom procedures.

17. How will I find out about updates to Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Upon set-up of your program, you will specify contact name(s) to be contacted upon updates to the product. This contact person (s) will receive an email prior to procedure and feature updates to make you aware of the upcoming changes.
You can also view all updated and reviewed procedures in the Updates Tab that can be found in the Administration section of the Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills.

Technical Specifications

1. What are the system requirements for Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills is hosted on LWW’s servers and runs via the internet. Therefore the product works best using Internet Explorer 7.0 but can also work fine using Internet Explorer 6.0. Additionally, Flash version 9.0 is required to view the videos within the product.

2. Is there any integration required with my hospital’s technology infrastructure?
No. However, we do recommend accessing the product with a broadband internet connection for best performance.

3. Do you integrate with any learning management systems?
Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills can currently be integrated with the Healthstream Learning Center. Contact your Healthstream representative or an LWW representative at practicesales@wolterskluwer.com or 1-800-326-1685 to learn more.

4. Who do I contact for technical assistance with Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills?
Technical assistance is available Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST at 1-800-343-0064 or wkhealth-support@wolterskluwer.com. Emergency after hours support is available at 1-877-247-6843.

5. Will technical support for Procedures 3.0 still be available?
Yes. You can get support for Procedures 3.0 until November 2009 by calling 1-800-343-0064.

6. At what speed do the video clips play?
The videos are tested to work at broadband speed which is typically 768 kbs.
